About Us

Introduction

While working as a teacher I’ve sometimes found it difficult to find certain items, been stunned by the cost of a class set of some kits and I’ve often felt that things should be simpler to buy, store, explain and use. These frustrations along with a background of STEM design projects led me to take matters into my own hands and I’ve been repairing, adapting or designing custom equipment for use in my school for a while now.

The prototypes shared with pupils were really well received as the function of the equipment is obvious and that allows pupils to get stuck into exploring Physics with the minimum amount of introduction. The designs are then usually refined based on feedback from pupils and teachers and some of them are then developed into commercial products. Pupils seem to really appreciate highly functional hand made products as they don’t see those often these days and they allow them to imagine how the laws of Physics were discovered in the 1st place.

Simple Science Supplies was created with a longer term goal of cutting the cost of quality equipment for schools and allowing pupils to percieve Physics as familiar and simple to investigate rather than something that only works with overly “fancy” equipment made by specialist factories. One half of this goal involves designing new products that currently aren’t on the market such as the bed of nails, marble run, oscillators or mystery circuit boxes. The other half is to provide alternatives to existing products so you can buy a whole class set for the usual cost of a single item e.g. pendulums or resistance wire boards.

If you buy from us you can be sure that the person designing, building and answering your questions has direct experience using these products with typical pupils on an ongoing basis. These products all do their job really well while making our jobs easier. Purchasing from us means supporting someone spending their time and effort trying to solve the practical problems that limit our work. I am also keen to hear from anyone who has product requests or ideas they are willing to share.
